Social Justice Through the Lens of Yoga

Sukhasana, Referred to as “Easy Pose” (Qualities: Grounding, Rejuvenating)

Yoga is a practice that can help us to connect with our bodies, minds, and spirits. It can also help us to heal from trauma and live more peaceful and fulfilling lives. The world of yoga is not isolated from the social and political issues that exist in our world. In fact, yoga can be a powerful tool for social justice if we are willing to use it in that way.

Here are some of the reasons why it's important to be aware of social justice issues if you practice yoga:

  • Yoga is rooted in a tradition of social justice. The yogic philosophy teaches us about the interconnectedness of all beings and the importance of living a life of non-violence. This philosophy can be a powerful force for social change.

  • Yoga can help us to develop empathy and compassion for others. When we practice yoga, we learn to cultivate a deep awareness of our own bodies and minds. This awareness can help us to develop empathy and compassion for others, who may be experiencing different challenges than we are.

  • Yoga can help us to challenge the status quo. Yoga can help us to see the world through a new lens and to challenge the systems of oppression that exist in our society. When we practice yoga, we can become more aware of our own privilege and how we can use our privilege to make a difference in the world.

  • Yoga can help us to build community. Yoga is a practice that is often done in community. When we practice yoga with others, we build relationships and create a sense of belonging. As more time with others increases our understanding and empathy, this sense of community can be a powerful force for social change.

If you are a yoga practitioner, there are many ways that you can use your practice to promote social justice. Here are a few ideas:

  • Get involved in social justice organizations. There are many organizations that are working to create a more just world. You can get involved in these organizations by volunteering your time, donating money, or spreading awareness about their work.

  • Speak out against injustice. When you see injustice, don't be afraid to speak up. You can speak out in your personal life, in your community, or on social media.

  • Use your platform to promote social justice. If you are a yoga teacher or have a large social media following, you can use your platform to promote social justice. You can do this by sharing information about social justice issues, raising money for social justice organizations, or hosting events to raise awareness.

  • Support businesses and organizations that are committed to social justice. When you spend your money, you are voting with your dollar. Choose to support businesses and organizations that are committed to social justice.

Yoga is a powerful tool for social change. By being aware of social justice issues and using our practice to promote justice, we can make a difference in the world.
